Frederick II or know as Frederick "The Great" was born on January 24, 1712 in Berlin. His father was frederick william and his mother sophia Dorothea, daughter of knig george of England. He spent his childhood doing rigorous military training and education. When Frederick was born his father had already seen two of his children die. Growing up he likes the play the flute and write poetry. His father didnt like the fact that he liked doing these things. He was treated bad for it then tried to flee to England. When his father found out what Fredericks plans were he put his son in solidary confinement. He was forced at 18 to watch as the friend who had helped was beheaded, and was arrested and charged with desetion. He was harshly militarily trained. As an adult he studied music and French Literature. As king he guided the growth of the kingdom he inherited toward its place at the head of the German Nations. Frederick II fought to oppose Austrian ambitions, he earned a great reputation as a military commander. From 1740 to 1748 he seized Silesia and defeated the Austrians. In the second Silesia War he gained other territories as well. He continued to brilliantly use his desciplined army to force all to recognize Prussia as a "Great Power". His exploits earned him the name Frederick "The Great". He skillfully employed the limited Prussian reasources to make his kingdom the most powerful German state during the Seven Year War(1756-1763). He participated in the first partition of Poland and by the time he died he had doubled the area of his country.
